Colorado Parks and Wildlife Releases Draft Wolf Reintroduction Plan

During a virtual meeting streamed live on YouTube on December 9 ( view recording here ), Colorado Parks and Wildlife released their first draft of the state’s wolf reintroduction plan that was mandated in 2020 by a state ballot initiative . In the document, the agency outlines its proposal for releasing 30-50 wolves over a 3 to 5-year timeframe in two primary areas in western Colorado. It also outlines recommended plans for monitoring and management and for livestock conflict compensation. The agency does note that details of the plan could change as a result of the upcoming public comment period.

“All Coloradans interested in wolf restoration should view the recording online at a time that is most convenient for you,” said CPW Acting Director Heather Dugan. “Please take a look at the draft plan and submit your input at a public meeting in January and February or through the online comment form,” Dugan said.

The draft Plan is now posted on CPW’s Wolves - Stay Informed page. A form for public comment is posted at engagecpw.org and will remain open through Feb. 22, 2023.

Five statewide hearings will be held to acquire information from the public to be considered in developing the Plan. The hearing dates and locations are listed below with approximate times:
